The Gateway to the World

It was the departure point for the Mayflower in 1620, and for the ill-fated Titanic in 1912. Once the main entrance to medieval Southampton, the Bar Gate is a fantastic spot to begin a walking tour of the historic part of town. Construction on the fortified gate began in the 1100s, and today the gate stands as one of the city’s most recognizable structures.

Considered to have one of the best collections in England, the Museum of Archaeology has pieces dating as far back as the Roman conquest, which began around AD 43. Artifacts are displayed in a medieval building known as God’s House Tower.
