Small town. Big adventure.

Nestled within a deep fjord and surrounded by dramatic snow-capped mountains lies Seyðisfjörður—a quirky, charming enclave on Iceland’s eastern coast. Built on the back of the Icelandic herring fishing industry, there’s nowhere on Earth quite as picturesque, peaceful, or peculiar as Seyðisfjörður, and, with Azamara Club Cruises’® smaller ships, we think we fit right in.

One of the most historically and architecturally interesting towns in East Iceland, Seyðisfjörður is home to a community of colorful wooden buildings dating back to the 19th century, and a quick stroll through town to take them in is a must. Be sure to stop at the famed Blue Church along the way—its distinct powder blue hue and architecture make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in Iceland.

Waterfalls abound in this sleepy town. Follow the east bank of the Fjarðará River on foot to witness a breathtaking 25 of them. If a road trip is more your speed, the scenic route 93 drive from Egilsstaðir will have you climbing to a high pass before descending along the Fjarðará where you can witness the falls from the road. Along your adventure, don’t be surprised if a local invites you into their home for a chat—this is a friendly town eager to share its magic with visitors. Now that’s what we call #AzaLocal.

Tvísöngur Sound Sculpture

The hills are alive with the sound of music in Seyðisfjörður. The Tvísöngur sound sculpture consists of five interconnected concrete domes embedded into the mountainside above the town. Step inside, strike up a chord (vocal or musical), and each dome comes to life in the Icelandic musical tradition of five-tone harmony. You’ve got to hear it to believe it.

The Blue Church

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Iceland, the Blue Church welcomes visitors with its unique color and wooden architecture. Once located on a hill overlooking Vestdalseyri, it was blown over in a storm and rebuilt in heart of Seyðisfjörður where it stands today. During the summer, be sure to attend the Blue Church concert series, which has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1998.
