Find a Voyage:

A land of historic, cultural & ecological sights

Located on the northeastern coast of Borneo in East Malaysia, Sandakan is an often-overlooked port with historic charm and plenty of nearby ecotourism daytrips. If you’re feeling up for a boat ride, a river cruise on the Kinabatangan River will take you on a leisurely journey past some of the richest ecosystems on earth. As you cruise by lush mangrove swamps and fertile flood plains, be sure to keep an eye out for the region’s most famous inhabitants—the proboscis monkey.

And speaking of primates, venture to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Center to catch a glimpse of orange orangutans. The best time to visit is around their twice-daily feeding times when the center’s elusive residents emerge from the jungle. For more watery pursuits, take a quick jaunt to Kampung Buli Sim Sim—a water village on stilts. Dine on fresh seafood at a floating restaurant, or on the region’s famous UFO cakes—a sweet sponge cake with a meringue-like top and a custard center—they’re out of this world.

Head to this traditional stilt village for a glimpse into an entirely different way of life from your own. Remembering that you are as much an oddity to the residents as their village is to you, a friendly smile is universally understood when language barriers arise.
