Explore Untouched Beaches and Life Under the Sea

The port town of Sabang is a little slice of beach and jungle paradise on the island of Pulau Weh (also known locally as Sabang). Dipping into the Indian Ocean off the tip of Sumatra, it is the most northwestern island of the Indonesian archipelago. Part traditional fishing village, part colonial-era town, Sabang is a picturesque community with timeless traditions, rustic way of life, and charming friendly people.

Fishing is still a primary way of life on the island, and fishing boats are available for visitors to rent. Stroll past traditional fishermen’s huts along the harbor and watch the fishing boats bring in their daily catch and cast their nets into the sea. And of course, enjoy plenty of fresh fish and seafood. Indulge in grilled fish, live fish, lobsters and a view over Sabang Harbor with some rujak, local fruit with spicy peanut sauce.

For gorgeous views of the bay across the peninsula to Kasih Beach, venture to Kota Ata, the upper part of town, where you’ll also find colonial buildings, a vestige to its former Dutch residents. Stop for cake and coffee at a traditional Acehnese coffee shop on the water, where they serve outstanding locally grown coffee. Try the ever-popular mie jalak, a specialty Sabang noodle dish. Or venture to Rek, food stalls where you can try BBQ chicken, octopus satay, duck, fried potatoes, and more.

The incredible beaches and expanses of pure natural beauty certainly draw people in, but the real appeal is the atmosphere of Sabang and its people. Some locals say the island’s name comes from the phrase santai banget, meaning very relaxed. Whether it’s true or not, after your visit to Sabang, you’re sure to agree.
