Get ready to have a whale of a time

Tucked into a protected bay in northern Patagonia, Port Madryn was founded by some unlikely settlers. In 1865, 150 Welsh immigrants fleeing the economic hardship of Britain’s Industrial Revolution founded the city when they arrived to build the Central Chubut Railway. Head to the nearby town of Gaiman for a little taste of Wales way across the pond. Here you’ll find charming Welsh-style homes and quaint teahouses.

You’ll also find plenty of whales of the aquatic variety in Port Madryn, too. Southern right whales can be seen all around the Valdes Peninsula across the bay, but if you’re lucky you might also catch a glimpse of these majestic behemoths from the seaside promenade of Almirante Brown Boulevard. The area around Port Madryn is famous for its diverse wildlife. Punta Tombo National Reserve is home to a huge colony of Magellanic penguins, and Punta Loma Reserve is the best place to see sunbathing South American sea lions.

Discover even more of the natural world at Ecocentro, an interactive science center full of touch pools, engaging exhibits, and sweeping views of the sea below.
