Local charms with an International vibe
Considered one of the trendiest destinations on the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa Del Carmen (or “Playa” as it’s referred to by locals) is a popular resort town at the center of the Mayan Riviera. Getting around downtown Playa is easy, with its rectangular grid layout, so you’ll have no problem finding restaurants, shops, boutiques, and bars, especially along the 5th Avenue thoroughfare.
For more nature-based adventures, go on an eco tour to Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, head to Puerto Aventuras for deep-sea fishing, or visit the Bay of Akumal to see green turtles up close and personal.
With its variety of marine life, underwater caverns, and the world’s second largest coral reef system, Playa Del Carmen is also fantastic for scuba diving and snorkeling.
PLAYA DEL CARMEN
PLAYA DEL CARMEN
Known simply as “the beach”, Playa del Carmen’s namesake is not to be missed. The beautiful, white sand beaches and azure waters are as inviting as the town itself. For those seeking activities, the reefs in the area are fantastic for diving and snorkeling.
This ecotourism park gets its name from a nearby Maya archaeological site. Xcaret Park offers several nature based attractions like a coral reef aquarium, turtle nesting site, a manatee area, as well as bird and butterfly pavilions. Several Mexican cultural exhibits can also be found.
Directly off the coast of Playa del Carmen is the charming island of Cozumel. Small sites of Maya ruins dot the island alongside charming towns and villages. But the main reason to visit is for the spectacular SCUBA diving and snorkeling found in the island’s many sheltered coral reefs.
