Cruise to the Pearl of the Black Sea

Step back in time and explore the ancient city of Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site first settled at the end of the Bronze Age. Accessible on foot via a narrow manmade isthmus, “Bulgaria’s Dubrovnik” is now a veritable showcase of monuments, museums, and fortifications from the past three millennia. (Be sure to get a photo of yourself in front of the iconic windmill that has stood guard and welcomed visitors since the Ottoman era.)

Nessebar is also home to more than 40 churches, the most per capita in Bulgaria, if not the world. Some of the must-sees include St. Stefan’s Church and the Old Metropolitan Church, which was built in the 4th century. Venture down some of the quieter cobblestone streets and you’ll find shops filled with souvenirs like handmade lace, painted earthenware, and intricately embroidered red tablecloths—a local tradition.

When you’re ready to return to the present, stroll along North Beach, all the way past the remains of a pirate ship, to the resort mecca Sunny Beach. As the name would lead you to believe, this is the perfect spot to replenish your vitamin D levels. Grab a cold glass of rakia or ayran, relax on one of the chaise lounges overlooking the Black Sea, and think, “This is the life.” (Or as they say in Bulgaria, “Tova e zhivota!”)
