White sands, swaying palms & spices

The balmy shores of Goa (and the port of Mormugao) have beckoned restless wanderers for centuries, from the Portuguese who occupied the area for four and a half centuries, to the artists, painters, and architects who now call this lush tropical land home. But for all the restless energy that has brought folks here, Goa is famous for it’s feeling of susegad—a relaxed, laid-back attitude towards life.

Speaking of, relaxing on the pristine beaches is practically a requirement for visiting, and there are plenty of places to enjoy the sand between your toes. And once you’ve soaked up some sun, explore some of the craft markets found throughout the region. The Aparent shop in Vasco da Gama in particular specializes in delicate crochet pieces, perfect for tucking into a suitcase to bring home. But take note: Siesta is much-loved and observed tradition.

If you’re looking for a tipple, sample the local liquor, Feni, made from cashews in Northern Goa, and coconut in Southern Goa. This distinctive drink is made in traditional stills using methods passed down from Portuguese settlers (or occupiers, depending on who you ask). But beware, it’s famously potent, so one might be enough!
