A HIDDEN FORTRESS TOWN AWAITING YOUR DISCOVERY

One look at Monemvasia as you pull in to port and it’s easy to understand why locals nicknamed it The Rock. Shrouded by precipitous cliffs along the brilliant teal waters of the Myrtoan Sea, Monemvasia is a castle town suspended in history. Adding to the feeling that it comes from another time, Monemvasia is tethered to our world by a simple causeway.

A visit to the Old Town of Monemvasia highlights a medieval settlement that is not only perfectly preserved—it’s still inhabited! Here, you’ll find ancient monuments and religious sites, as well as an invaluable archaeological collection housed in an old mosque opposite the beautiful Elkomenos Christos Cathedral. Monemvasia boasts traces of Frankish, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman influences all over the island, resulting in captivating architecture and a distinct flare that all adds up to endless discovery as you explore winding, narrow streets.

Those looking to hit their daily step goal will want to take the cobbled path that zigzags toward Ano Poli. Though demanding, this walk is worth it for the spectacular views of town and the Myrtoan Sea that stretches out beyond. Along the way, stop at Aghia Sofia, a 12th-century church that is all that remains of the upper part of town. After exploring, make your way down by the Portelo, and stop in at a taverna to enjoy a local favorite, Malvasia wine before heading back to your ship.

Christos Elkomenos Square

This bustling square is home to the Church of Elkomenos Christos, the most famous church in Monemvasia. And that really says something considering locals often joke there are more churches than residents! Elkomenos Christos houses an engaging collection of artifacts and paintings, including one famously stolen from the church, only to be returned 30-years later.
