Interview of Captain Gianmario Sanguineti

Q: Where did you grow up?

I was born in Chiavari, Italy, a small town near Portofino. I’ve been traveling since I was a year old because my father was the captain of an oil tanker. I’ve been lucky enough to live in Germany, Aruba, the United States, and Spain.

Q: What's your favorite place to visit, and why?

The beautiful island of Aruba. It’s surrounded by sea with breathtaking beaches and plenty of fish. Paradise.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career at sea?

My father worked at sea and I fell in love with the lifestyle at an early age. I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I can’t imagine living in a place without the sea.

Lima, Peru

Q: Where do you live now?

I live in Lima, Peru. If you’ve never been, I strongly recommend it. Great and rich culture.


Cap Town, South Africa

Q: What are some of your favorite ports, and why?

This is a tough one because there are so many. Cape Town, South Africa, due to the friendliness of the locals and the city’s special charm. Sydney, Australia, because it’s just a beautiful place to be. Then there’s Venice, Italy, which is indescribable. Sailing through the canals is like sailing through a museum.

Q: What are you most looking forward to as you begin your journey with Azamara?

I can’t wait to join one of the best teams in the industry and meet new friends along the way. The size of Azamara Journey allows us to visit smaller, less-traveled ports. I can’t wait to experience destinations I’ve never been before.

Q: If you could offer one piece of career advice to sea cadets and officers, what would it be?

Learn to enjoy every single moment you get to spend working at sea. It expands your horizons, transports you to new and exciting destinations, introduces you to interesting people (guests and colleagues alike), and colors your life with enriching experiences. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Q: Last one. Can tell us one unique fact about yourself?

I love to cook and I do the cooking at home. As an Italian, I pride myself on preparing authentic Italian dishes. Can’t beat it.
