A journey of Volcanic proportions

On August 26-27, 1883, Krakatoa blew its top in one of the most violent volcanic events ever recorded. The explosion is still considered to be the loudest sound in modern history, with reports of it being heard nearly 3,000 miles away. The shock wave was recoded on barographs around the globe.

Its offspring, Anak Krakatoa (child of Krakatoa), poked its little cone head above water in 1930, and has continued to grow. Still active and periodically emitting ash, rocks, and lava flows, it can sometimes put on quite a show.
