France Intensive: Barcelona to Monte-Carlo
Unhurried. Unrushed. Unequaled in relaxation. That’s La belle vie in the south of France. Need we say more?
Our first stop is Sete, home to the great medieval walled city of Carcassonne. Go wine-tasting, or take a walking tour of Sete’s markets to sample local cheeses, fruits and delicacies like octopus pie.
The action picks up with an overnight stay in Marseilles. Visit Vieux Port, the lively fishing harbor; Le Panier, one of the oldest and most stroll-worthy neighborhoods; or the North African souks and shops in the Capucin district.
The petite size of Sanary-Sur-Mer means you won’t see any big ships. Stroll the little shops and patisseries, then settle in at a harborside restaurant for a seafood feast paired with local wines.
In Calvi you can stroll from the ship to a long promenade of inviting shops and restaurants, or head up the hill to the massive Citadel and even more impressive views.
St. Tropez, Cannes and Monte-Carlo need little introduction, but we’re happy to introduce you to some of our favorite things, like cafes along Pampelonne Beach, wine-tasting in nearby coastal vineyards, and hilltop villages with astounding views. Relax. Enjoy. La belle vie indeed.
Barcelona is a cosmopolitan masterpiece. With a history rich in art and architecture, medieval, Gothic, and modern influences can be seen all over the city. Start at the waterfront and stroll up the shady, tree-lined Las Ramblas boulevard and discover some of the city's best shopping and bustling cafes.
Take a walk along the canals of “the Venice of Languedoc” where, from late spring to early autumn, the canals turn into friendly battlegrounds for water jousting competitions, a passionate tradition that dates back to 1666. Next, settle in at one of the restaurants along the Quai de le Résistance or Quai Général Durand for a meal of the freshest seafood you can possibly imagine.
2,600 years of history come to life in the magnificent port of Marseilles. The Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée is filled to the brim with insight on the culture of this wonderful region and well worth a visit. From here, explore La Panier for souvenirs to remind you of your journey. Cap off your day with a glass of pastis—an alcoholic beverage that is a local favorite!
Visit église Saint Nazaire, a late 19th century Gothic Revival church, or Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, built in 1560. Stroll along the palm-lined harbor, where you’ll find rows of old Provençal wooden fishing boats, pointus, and if you’re lucky, some local fishermen selling the day’s catch. Or simply taste the freshest seafood in any number of Sanary restaurants in this charming and inviting town.
Stroll along the harbor and marvel at the yachts, many of which dwarf the surrounding buildings. Join other jet setters on one of the fabulous beaches, some of which are clothing optional. Ooh, la la! For lunch, the old fishing quarter La Ponche has plenty of seafood restaurants serving the day’s freshest catches and refreshing rosés, a regional specialty.
The birthplace of Christopher Columbus, channel the explorer's adventurous spirt while you make your way through this intriguing fortress city. Every step up to the Citadel is well worth it for the views alone, but you'll also be treated to delicious restaurants and charming shops along the way.
Chic and glamorous, this iconic seaside resort town on the French Riviera is the place to see and be seen. Spot socialites and stars along Le Promenade de la Croisette, and shop for famous luxury brands. Head to the old town district of Le Suquet and discover culinary delights hidden along winding cobblestoned streets.
You don’t need luck on your side to have an unforgettable time in Monte Carlo! Home to the legendary Grand Casino and the Monaco Grand Prix—one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events—Monte Carlo lives up to its reputation in every way. Drive the Monaco Grand Prix route in a performance vehicle, visit the Grand Casino, or roll the dice and explore the breathtaking beauty of the city.
