We begin with a Stockholm departure, so you may want to arrive a day or two early, then spend a day at sea before arriving in St Petersburg.
Recognized as a leading influencer in the world of luxury travel, Jean Newman Glock recently described one of the advantages of sailing with Azamara in the Huffington Post. “Three full days to explore the former Imperial City is a gift,” she said. But choices must still be made. Here are a few of hers for St. Petersburg, the first port on the journey.
The Winter Palace and State Hermitage Museum, founded by Catherine the Great, are just steps from the ship. See the world-class art collection and visit some of the rooms in the living quarters of the Romanovs. “Sense the (very opulent) daily life of the Tsars.”
Next take the hydrofoil to the Peterhof Palace. After a tour, spend time in the gardens and stay to watch the fountains come on. The Catherine Palace, with the magnificent Amber Room, and the Carriage Museum nearby are must-sees. And “The Cathedral of Peter and Paul and the splendid mosaics inside the Church on Spilled Blood, both leave me breathless every visit.”
Of course on this voyage, there’s still more to see. Late stays in the best of the Baltic, Helsinki, with its Art Nouveau architecture, or travel the countryside to visit a horse breeding farm in the town of Sipoo.
This voyage also features four ports we’ll be visiting for the very first time. Riga, Latvia with its Baroque churches, a hidden gem, Klaipėda, Lithuania, the cobblestoned streets of Gdańsk, Poland’s old towne, and Rønne, Bornholm, Denmark, the pearl of the Baltic. All concluding in Copenhagen, where you may want to stay a little longer before you head home.
Experience the best of northern charm in Stockholm. A perfect balance of green space, Scandinavian architecture, and enchanting palaces, Stockholm is the perfect city to relax and explore. Start in Gamla Stan—the city’s oldest section—for a glimpse at how life used to be. Then, make your way to SoFo for delicious meals and specialty shopping. And don’t forget to check out the ABBA Museum!
Spend the day sailing in style aboard your boutique hotel at sea. Indulge in a treatment at Sanctum Spa, stay ship shape with a class at our fitness center, or lounge the day away on our sunny pool deck.
In the evening, savor inspired Italian cuisine at Aqualina, or relish in a classic steakhouse experience at Prime C. Plus, you’ll find plenty of exciting evening entertainment, from thrilling shows at Cabaret Lounge to intimate performances in the Living Room.
Affectionately referred to as the Venice of the North, St. Petersburg is home to an incredibly diverse array of architecture. From golden domed churches to opulent palaces, St. Petersburg is certain to leave you in awe. In particular, don’t miss the Winter Palace, located within the Hermitage complex, one of the world’s largest museums and home to more three million works of art and artifacts!
Helsinki is a successful blend of traditional and modern architecture and design, interwoven with the beauty of nature, and a few quirky, purely Finnish touches—such as a church built inside a giant chunk of granite. Popular attractions include the Ateneum Art Museum, Esplanade Park, Design District Helsinki, Market Square, and Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Riga’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and its winding, wobbly lanes are beautiful to wander through. The Museum of the Occupation is fascinating, haunting in parts. The restored 18th-century National Opera House is worthy of a whole evening. The new National Library is a huge glass and steel mountain. And don’t miss an organ recital in The Dome - the organ one of the largest in Europe.
Walk the cobblestoned Old Town in Klaipėda and you’ll see its German heritage in the architecture, beginning at Theatre Square where Hitler once spoke. The old warehouses by the Dane River are now pubs and restaurants; try a traditional lunch of fish stew with black bread. Other sites to see include Memelburg Castle, the Ethnographic Fisherman’s Farmstead, and the quaint village of Palanga.
Gdynia is perhaps one of the most underrated cities in all of Europe. A modern naval port born from the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, this former fishing village has transformed into an ocean playground. Stroll along the waterfront—one of the longest in Europe—and take in the endless white sand beaches, sweeping views of the Baltic Sea, boats of all sizes, and two floating museum ships.
The island of Bornholm boasts numerous picturesque fishing villages and 15 medieval churches, some of which are 12th century round structures with unique artwork and architecture. Take a stroll down quiet cobbled lanes in the old part of the capital, Ronne. Wednesday is market day on the main square of St. Tory, a great opportunity to chat up the locals, and see what’s on offer at their stalls.
Fairy-tale architecture and avant-garde modern designs create an enchanting atmosphere in Scandinavia's largest city. Copenhagen's quality of life is exceptional, with countless green spaces and bicycle paths—offering you every opportunity to take in the culture and cuisine of the City of Spires.
