A spicy mix of temples, villages &
natural wonders

Galle was a port in the network of trading posts that was the spice route. First Arab dhows, and later Portuguese galleons and the ships of the Dutch East India Company called here to add cinnamon to the cargoes of pepper and cloves in their holds. Here, on the very tip of the island, the Dutch built a fortified city, where you can still stroll the ramparts for views unimpeded by modern buildings.

The south also offers stunning Buddhist monasteries, picturesque villages, richly decorated cave temples, national parks that are home to an incredible array of wildlife including elephant herds, and a variety of whales and dolphins offshore.
