During this walking tour of Zadar, you will savor the entirely unique flavor and fascinating history of its world-renowned liqueur. Maraschino is distilled from the fruit of the marasca cherry tree, which grows wild along parts of the Dalmatian Coast. It was first produced in the 18th century and quickly became the toast of Europe. In fact, Napoleon Bonaparte himself is said to have preferred a small glass of Maraschino after his dinner. British King George IV was so enthralled by the nectar that he sent a British Naval fleet to Zadar to collect a hundred cases. These days, Maraschino has been added to the official list of authentic Croatian souvenirs. Thus, it goes without saying that a visit to Zadar without sampling the sweet goodness of Maraschino would be a shame. Fortunately, a visit to the rustic Arsenal Tavern provides the perfect opportunity to embrace the complex cherry flavor of Croatia’s favorite spirit.
Learn about the origin of Maraschino, the liqueur perfected in Zadar by Francesco Drioli, a Venetian merchant.
Enjoy a captivating taste of this wonderfully sweet liqueur known for its tantalizing aroma and surprising punch.
