Århus, Denmark’s second-largest city, strikes the perfect balance between innovative and old, between groundbreaking and historic, so there’s an experience here for everyone.

The beautiful 12th-century Domkirke has Denmark’s largest stained-glass window and Bernt Notke’s magnificent 15th-century wooden altarpiece. It’s the centerpiece of the city and a good place to start your tour. After a traditional smørrebrød sandwich at Smagløs, one of Åhus’s oldest cafés, you can visit the 15-century Church of Our Lady with a crypt church dating back to the 11th century.

Enough of the old, on to the groundbreaking: in this case, the museums, some of the most intriguing in Europe. Start at the innovative Mosegard Museum that shows how we’ve evolved, literally. The Old Town museum is a charming way to visit the 1800’s. The Occupation Museum is fascinating, set in the former Gestapo headquarters. And when you pass Ron Mueck’s crouching 16ft sculpture “Boy!” at the ARoS, Kunstmuseum you’re back in modern time.

And probably hungry - luckily, Guide Michelin Nordic Cities has awarded three different restaurants here. Velbekomme!
