Once a quiet fishing village, oil and gas reserves have been discovered offshore and Bintulu is now a center of energy production. It is also the gateway to the magical Similajua National Park, a protected habitat for nesting green turtles who produce a lot of energy of their own. If the timing’s right, you can watch them on Golden Beach, digging in the sand, burying eggs that will soon hatch and scurry out to the sea. Some of Malaysia’s colorful birds along with dolphins and porpoises can be seen here as well. Explore along the walking trails and see what you can find.

There are important archaeological caves in the thick rain forest of Niah National Park, inhabited some 40,000 years ago. An enchanting boardwalk connects the caves, one filled with ancient rock paintings, another one of the largest caves in the world.

One last adventure is reached by longboat on the river. The journey itself is enchanting, the wooden houses on stilts, even more so. But the most captivating part is being able to meet the people who live there. These gracious hosts will invite you in for delicious Malaysian cuisine and tales of life unchanged for thousands of years.
