A Safe Port for Whalers and Sailors

European explorers fell in love with Albany in the 17th century and we’re betting you’ll do the same. The beauty of its rugged coastline befits its dramatic whaling, convict and settler history, and the city retells it in exceptional ways.

There is a unique museum in an old whaling station where you’ll discover the part whales played in Albany’s past. Then try to spot them from the shore. Because whaling was banned here in 1978, Albany is now a safe port of call for migrating humpbacks and blues. Take a picnic to the stunning Little Beach in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve and watch the show.

In the 1850’s, England sent their convicts here. See where they lived in the cellblocks and Warders quarters at the Old Goal & Museum. And don’t miss the poignant National Anzac Centre, which celebrates the army corps’ role in the Gallipoli battles of the First World War. Rated one of Lonely Planet’s Hottest New Experiences, The National Anzac Centre is a moving reflection on the men and women who sailed (and still sail) to war so far from home.
