An Isolated Tropical Hideaway

The Papagayo Peninsula in northwestern Costa Rica has an isolated beauty that five-star hotels have discovered but not many others. On the stunning beaches you can pretend you’re a castaway - the only other footprints you’ll see are probably a turtle’s. You can take a catamaran tour around the Gulf of Papagayo. It's amazing.

As scientists all over the world do, you can visit Palo Verde National Park, and walk through its rich ecosystem of rivers, marshland, mangroves and tropical dry forest, where crocodiles, howler monkeys and iguanas make their homes. The leafless trees make it easy to spot up to 300 species of birds, from spoonbills to wood storks.

Or try the Witch’s Rock canopy tour, which is unlike any zip-line you’ve ever experienced: one hour suspended above valleys, in the middle of treetops, passing vine snakes, howler monkeys and birds, with an opportunity to stop and try repelling. Or stop and get off - there are five exit routes if it seems too long.
