Marine History in a Modern City

A lively port in France’s Brittany region, Brest is the second largest French military port after Toulon. The city originally dates back to the middle ages, but was heavily bombed during World War II. Nestled in one of France’s most picturesque natural harbors, Brest’s history has always been closely aligned with the sea.

Immerse yourself in Brest’s seafaring culture with a stroll along the docks at the Quai Commandant-Malbert, where you’ll see bustling shipyards, colorful buoys, and vessels such as renowned schooner La Recouvrance and one of the world’s most powerful tugboats, the Abeille-Flandres. For a stunning view from above, a cable car ride provides a unique glimpse at Brest from above the Penfeld River.

Continuing along the waterfront, you’ll find yourself at the Musée national de la Marine. Housed inside a striking castle–one of the last remains of the old city–the museum guides visitors through 17 centuries of naval history that have shaped today’s Brest.

Go beneath the water’s surface at Océanopolis, Europe’s biggest open-air aquarium. With three unique pavilions (polar, tropical, and temperate), Océanopolis is home to many species of rescue animals and engaging interactive experiences.
