Always try to arrive a day or two before your cruise embarks to shake off the jet lag. In addition, arriving early gives you time to explore the city.
I briefly explored central London to take some nice photographs and experience the city, rather than being hustled from airport, to bus, to cruise ship. London was so expressive and large and diverse. I can now return in the future and spend an additional week discovering London and all it has to offer.
What I particularly love about Azamara cruises are the longer port stops, which sometimes provide two to three days to explore. One can experience the destinations through guided tours, but then there's time to re-examine areas of interest in greater detail and get lost in the city and its way of life.
Get underneath the skin of each city. You can download an app called GPS NAV which allows you to track your location without the use of any cellular signal or local SIM card. City and whole country maps can be downloaded ahead of time. You can also find local restaurants, shops and things to do and look up recommendations using the embedded Yelp feature. Don't be afraid to get lost to find yourself, because the app will always guide you back to the cruise dock!
The excitement builds as I sail away on the Azamara Quest and our journey begins. I am off cruising the delightful havens and vineyards of France, Spain and Portugal and look forward to the adventure ahead. Please follow my journey with #LoveTravel.
