Eight 2018 Cruises For Nature Lovers

As a nature lover, travel is an essential part of your life. You daydream of the majestic waterfalls, lush rainforests, and vast deserts. It’s a big world, and you long to explore every nook and cranny of it.

Cruising is the perfect travel option for nature lovers. Why? Cruising is about the journey and the destination. An Azamara voyage can take you to some of the world’s most breathtaking natural wonders, while allowing you to immerse yourself in the beauty of the world along the way. Forget claustrophobic train rides or cramped bus tours. Vivid sunsets, deep blue ocean views, and fresh, salty sea air await you on a luxury cruise. Even the newly reimagined décor onboard our two boutique ships evokes nature, with a color palette inspired by the places we travel.

If you love the great outdoors, any of these eight itineraries will make 2018 your best travel year yet.

Costa Rica in January 2018

Kick off 2018 in style on this country-intensive voyage. Nature lovers will simply adore Costa Rica, a travel destination beloved for its incredible beaches and rainforests.

In Quepos, don’t miss our Cruise Global, Eco Local shore excursion to Carara National Park. It’s home to over 100 species of birds, as well other animals like spider monkeys and crocodiles. (View the crocs from the safe vantage point of the Tarcoles Bridge.) The high point of the visit is Pura Vida Garden, thanks to its incredible waterfalls and exotic plant life.

New Zealand in February 2018

New Zealand is a bucket list destination for nature lovers. There’s a reason the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed in New Zealand – the terrain is so unique, you feel as though you’ve stepped into a fantasy world.

From Tauranga, we recommend you join our Cruise Global, Eco Local shore excursion to Rotorua. This “thermal wonderland” is home to mud pools, geysers, and volcanic craters.

After you’ve taken in the stunning landscape of Rotorua, take some time to learn about the area’s fascinating Maori culture. Guests can learn about traditional craftsmanship, dance, music, and Haka fighting skills.

Azores in April 2018

The Azores is a group of nine small islands found 800 miles off the coast of Portugal. The largest city, Ponta Delgada, is a popular eco-tourism destination. Here, you’ll find beautiful beaches, natural hot springs, volcanic craters, and the Lagoa do Fogo nature reserve.

The Azores islands are also heaven on earth for birdwatchers. Whether you’re an experienced birder or a first-time enthusiast, our Cruise Global, Eco Local tour to Tronqueira Mountain is a must. The mountain is home to the endangered Azores Bullfinch, of which there are only around 300 left. It’s also simply a stunning place to visit, so pack your camera!

Sri Lanka in April 2018

Beyond the port city of Colombo, Sri Lanka lies Pinnawala, a small island off the coast of India. It’s here you’ll find the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, a favorite Cruise Global, Eco Local shore excursion.

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage cares for orphaned or abandoned elephants who are unable to survive in the wild. Visitors may be able to watch the elephants enjoy bath time, or feed them pieces of fruit.

Travel writer Ann Tran visited the orphanage during an Azamara voyage and said it was an experience she’ll never forget. We know it will be unforgettable for you, too!

Norway in July 2018

Norway is a perfect travel destination for eco enthusiasts, thanks to its majestic landscape and outdoorsy culture. If you’re intrigued by what the region has to offer, a country-intensive voyage is the best way to explore it.

This fifteen-night summer adventure will call on eight different ports in Norway. And Azamara’s small, luxury ships are ideal for getting a close look at those famous towering fjords and cascading waterfalls. Hike glaciers, gaze upon emerald green lakes, and toast to midnight sunsets. There’s simply nowhere else on earth like Norway!

Croatia in September 2018

Another country worth devoting a voyage to is Croatia. Like Norway, this region’s stunning fjords are best seen from sea. Our small ships deftly navigate the Adriatic Sea and Croatia Inside Passage, providing guests with stunning views as they make their way from one place to the next.

For nature lovers, a highlight of the trip will be visiting Zadar, Croatia, and the nearby Krka National Park. The waterfalls, lakes, canyons, and greenery will have you pulling out your camera at every turn. (Don’t forget to tag your photos #AzaLocal!)

Toward the end of the voyage, explore the beautiful countryside and vineyards surrounding Sibenek – and maybe taste a few local wines, too.

Mexico in November 2018

This November itinerary offers the perfect mix of natural and urban landscapes, for travelers who enjoy both. Cruising round-trip from Miami, guests will spend an overnight stay in Havana, Cuba – talk about a bucket list destination! Take in the city’s incredible music, food, and history while there. Then it’s on to another overnight stay, this time in Cozumel, Mexico.

This island, located just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula, is one of the best fishing destinations in the world. If that doesn’t reel you in, it’s also renowned for fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. Join our Cruise Global, Adventure Local shore excursion and explore Cozumel’s Underwater National Park with us. We’ll boat to three different, incredible coral reefs – and we’ll handle all your snorkeling gear. If you want to preserve your memories of the experience, bring along an underwater camera. You can expect to see schools of tropical fish, moray eels, and more.

Australia in December 2018

How can you end 2018 with a bang? Ring in the New Year in Sydney, Australia! But first, spend two weeks exploring the best of Australian nature and wildlife.

This voyage begins on Australia’s west coast in Perth, before calling on Albany and Adelaide. Don’t miss The Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, or cruising the Aussie coastline in search of whales, dolphins, seabirds, and other wildlife.

On Kangaroo Island, pack your camera and a sense of adventure for a four-wheel drive tour of the area. The island is home not only to kangaroos, but sea lions, wallabies, koalas, platypuses, possums, and more.
