Natural Beauty Fit for a Giant

This quiet little hamlet is dwarfed by the outsized scenery that surrounds it: steep fjord walls, sparkling crystalline glaciers, foaming waterfalls, and an endless expanse of mountain tundra traversed by herds of reindeer.

A major “don’t miss” – the Vøringsfossen Waterfall. One of Norway’s most visited natural wonders, it is actually a conglomeration of cascades converging to plummet 600 feet before thundering into the waters of the fjord below.

One of Norway’s iconic natural attractions, the waterfall has a total drop of 158 yards. The most spectacular view is from the Fossli Hotel on the Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau. The hotel and surrounding area have inspired many artists, including Edvard Grieg who composed “Norwegian Folk Songs, Opus 66” in 1896.

Boasting three floors of interactive ecological exhibits and aquariums, the Nature Center is the perfect place to learn about the natural history of Eidfjord. One of the many highlights is a film about the Hardangervidda area entitled “Mountain, Fjord, and Waterfall” that’s presented on a 225 panoramic screen.

This small town is the gateway to the Hardangervidda Mountain Plateau and the Folgefonn Glacier. Visit the local church built in 1250, and marvel at the half million fruit trees against the snow-peaked mountains in the background.
