If the echoes of flamenco coming from a maze of medieval alleyways sound romantic, this may be your voyage. First, depart from the city of Lisbon, one of the oldest cities in the world, now home to a thriving cultural calendar including film festivals, art, fashion and design shows, book fairs, marathons and rock concerts. You may want to arrive a little early.
First stop, Seville. Tour the historic Centro to see the enormous Seville Cathedral with its vast retablo, just refurbished in 2014. There’s time for the even more enormous Alcázar (fortress) complex with the Mudéjar Palace where the King and Queen of Spain stay when they’re here. And, because the ship stays late here, there’s time to see the real Seville – the one that only gets going after dark.
There’s an overnight on the famed island of Ibiza, famed in part because of its nightlife. So after a day on the spectacular beaches, walking in the rustic hills or diving in the crystal-clear waters, it’s fun to venture out. Dance at Pacha Ibiza, feel your way in the stunning darkness of Space or mingle at Amnesia, where Paris Hilton DJs. An unforgettable experience, for sure.
Finally, there’s Valencia. Contrast the Gothic palaces of the beautiful old city with the unbelievable modern City of Arts and Sciences, designed by renowned architect Santiago Calatrava and set in a sunken park. In the evening, watch the sunset from a wooden boat tour of the wetlands of the Albufera Natural Park. End the stay with authentic paella, Valencia’s most famous dish.
Your voyage ends with an overnight in Barcelona, but you may want to extend your stay by a day or two in this fascinating city. Dine, shop, explore or finally get to take in that Flamenco show; it’s one of our Cruise Global, Connect LocalSM shore excursions options.
This sailing is just one of our many immersive Country-Intensive Voyages. Learn how you can explore one country with more time in port and overnight stays from your boutique hotel at sea here.
One of the oldest cities in the world, Lisbon is rich in architecture and criss-crossed by monument-studded grand boulevards. Must-sees include the church of Igreja de Sao Vicente de Fora, which dates back to the 12th century; Musee Calouste Gulbenkian, one of Europe’s leading fine arts museums; and Torre de Belém, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous monuments in Portugal.
One of Europe's oldest cities, Andalusian adventure awaits in Cadiz. Make your way through barrios and alleyways to the crown jewel of the city—the Cadiz Cathedral. Discover influences of Ancient Rome, delicious Spanish cuisine, and beautiful beaches with views of Morocco. Plus, Seville is just a short drive away.
The towering Rock of Gibraltar is a sight to behold. Overlooking the mouth of the Mediterranean from a height of 1,400 feet, it’s a natural fortress. It’s also home to huge caves and troupes of Barbary macaques that have taken up residence on The Rock’s upper reaches. On the streets below, you can explore dozens of British stores and pubs, and marvel that you’re a stone’s throw away from Spain.
World-renowned for it's wonderful climate, the sun shines on Almeria more than 320 days a year. Discover the influences of the Romans, Phoenicians, and Moors on the city's architecture, culture, and customs. Start in the heart of Almeria at Puerta Puchena and try a little tapas, then explore the modern city center.
Mountainous Ibiza is known as the White Island, perhaps because of the dazzling white walls of the traditional houses and churches that make up the small villages dotting its landscape. Its atmosphere is reminiscent of Greek islands, making it unique among the Balearic Isles, and its rustic beauty attracts artists, as well photo and film shoots. Ibiza’s nightlife is legendary and not to be missed!
Marvel at the stunning mix of innovative architecture and gothic beauty when you visit Valencia. This Spanish city is home to many avant-garde buildings, including the breathtaking City of Arts and Sciences cultural complex. Elsewhere, palaces and mansions constructed in the 15th century dot the cityscape, while The Silk Exchange resembles a medieval fortress housing many mysterious carvings.
Barcelona is a cosmopolitan masterpiece. With a history rich in art and architecture, medieval, Gothic, and modern influences can be seen all over the city. Start at the waterfront and stroll up the shady, tree-lined Las Ramblas boulevard and discover some of the city's best shopping and bustling cafes.
