Spend an enlightening day sharing the history and culture of New Zealand’s Maori tribe. Visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where in 1840 an agreement was signed giving Britain sovereignty over New Zealand. Though much contested as to the true nature of the accord, it remains a seminal moment in history. Visit the house where the treaty was signed and learn how it shaped New Zealand. Next, enter an ornately carved meeting house, Te Whare Runanga, for a dazzling performance of Maori weaponry, stick games, and the traditional “haka”, a spellbinding dance. Afterwards, take part in Maori workshop. Learn the art of flax weaving. Try your hand at making a traditional Maori flute. Or, learn to perform the “haka” yourself. Round out the day with a tour of the Museum of Waitangi. Learn the story of the region and its people, and see Maori treasures amassed from throughout New Zealand.
