Cruise to a town of historic & natural charms

There are times when you just want to hang out in a new town, not worrying about the heritage sites you have to check off your list, or visiting all the “must-sees” you MUST see. Well, fellow world travelers, Dikili is just the place for you!

Mind you, there are still plenty of charms to be found, like Dikili’s coastal area that dates back over 5,000 years, where remnants of ancient civilizations still remain. There is also the volcanic crater at Lake Kargol, the wooden Merkez Mosque, and the Nebiler waterfall and caves.

And if you do want to visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Pergamum is only a 30-minute drive away. Also known as “Pergamon” and, somewhat more shockingly, “the dwelling place of Satan”, the 3rd century BC ruins here include the Altar of Zeus, the Theater, and Asklepeion, the site where psychiatry was first practiced.

Then again, you could disregard everything we just mentioned, and take it easy instead by having a muddy good time at one of Dikili’s therapeutic hot springs and thermal mud baths, followed by some Turkish specialties at one of the restaurants overlooking the harbor. Decisions, decisions…
