Go bear-watching or fishing in Kodiak, or birding and beach-combing in Dutch Harbor, home of “The Deadliest Catch.” Tour pristine parks, kayak, take a helicopter tour and learn about Russia’s place in Alaskan history at the Baranov Museum. You’ll find a different frontier in Petropavlovsk, a 19th-century trading center in Russia. Learn the town’s history at the local museum, visit the Valley of the Geysers, or view wildlife on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Later you’ll arrive at Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. Look for red-crested white cranes at Kushiro-shitsugen National Park, and discover volcanic caldera lakes at Shikotsu-Tōya National Park.
