City of Art & History

Once envied for its strategic military location by the likes of Caesar and Napoleon, Boulogne Sur Mer is now the largest fishing port in France.

Its title as the “City of Art and History” is well-earned: a walk down its cobblestone streets is like taking a walk through the pages of history, from its early days of ancient Rome, to the 13th century forts and castle, to the present-day hustle and bustle.

Don’t miss the Château Musée and the 12th century belfry, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or Notre-Dame Basilica, which towers above the town. The building is known for its stunning Italian mosaic altar and medieval crypt—the largest in Northern Europe. The town is also home to France's second most popular tourist attraction north of Paris, Nausicaá, the National Sea Center.
