Commissioned in 1632 by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his late wife, the Taj Mahal is estimated to have taken 22,000 people to build, including laborers, painters, stonecutters, embroidery artists, and others. In addition, 1,000 elephants were utilized to help haul materials to the jobsite. Construction of the mausoleum was complete in 1643, but it would take another 10 years for the full project to be finished.

Fun Fact: The four sides of the building are perfectly identical, which creates the stunning mirror effect you likely have seen in images. Not bad for 21 years of work.
