Venetian Glasswork is a Beacon of Color in a Mist-shrouded Region

Fog often drapes this island off Italy’s northeastern coast, blanketing the narrow streets and submerging the stone bridge ways until all is lost in a milky sea. In the stillness, an oar dips into the canal and droplets of falling water reverberate off marble walls. A gondola glides by, and intricately worked stone buildings seem to rise out of the mist. All is monochromatic, a scene painted in shades of grey.

Amphorae and Hydria on Mykonos

Near the harbor, Mykonos’ archaeological museum gives visitors the chance to see an expansive collection of Greek pottery. The works date from the prehistoric period to the late Hellenistic and show fine examples of Greek ceramic craftsmanship. Most of the pieces come from the island of Rheneia and date to the 5th century B.C. There is also Cycladic pottery that dates to the Geometric period as well as a 7th-century B.C. pithos depicting scenes from the capture of Troy.

Donghuamen Night Market Sizzles

The Dongcheng District of Beijing is well known for its historical sites such as Tiananmen Square and The Forbidden City. By day, these sites, seemingly frozen in time, attract tourists and sightseers from across the world. But as night falls, the streets around Dongcheng spring to life as vibrant street markets set up shop. The largest of these markets is the Donghuamen Night Market, where red and white stalls stretch down the darkened streets, illuminating the night with an inviting warm glow. As you approach the market you are greeted by the cacophony of droves of competing merchants, each loudly promoting the delicacies on sale at their individual booths.
