Azamara

Destination Immersion

From the Desk of Captain Carl Smith, Master, Azamara Quest

A Walk in the Park: How Little Did We Know…
At the end of last week, Adriana, our Shore Ex Manager called me to let me know that there was a possibility of running the Samaria Gorge Excursion in Chania, Crete. The problem was that there were only 2 guests who had booked, and unless we could meet the minimum participation numbers, the excursion would likely be cancelled by the operator. Samaria Gorge is somewhere which has held my interest since first hearing about it from our Deployment Manager, Claudius Docekal last year, and I have wanted to experience it ever since.

Dispatch: Azamara Quest in Japanese Waters

Travel Weekly Editor in Chief Arnie Weissmann is sailing onboard the Azamara Quest from Hong Kong to Osaka, Japan, and reporting back. His latest report, from Nagasaki, follows:

He sees a report that an 8.9 magnitude earthquake has occurred off the northeast coast of Japan, and that a tsunami warning has been issued. He immediately phones hotel director Philip Herbert and reports what he heard. Herbert immediately calls Captain Carl Smith, who is in his office.

A Message From the Captain: Kagoshima, Japan

March 10, Kagoshima

We arrived in the bay of Kagoshima in the early hours. We arrived in the bay as early as possible to get out of the swell, and slowed all the way down to arrive alongside at 7:00am.  Staff Captain Michalis did the maneuver, turning the ship gently to starboard, and backing in the last half mile, hardly using the thrusters to avoid waking our guests.  As we came closer to the quay, we could make out the beautiful Japanese Gardens which have been built around the cruise pier, the big “Welcome to Kagoshima” sign above the mosaic map of South West Japan, and we were greeted by both a wonderful Brass Band on the quay, and the Sunshine as the sun rose over the top of Sukurajima Volcano.
