St. George Island, Bermuda

St. George Island, Bermuda

The ship Sea Venture was wrecked on these shores in 1609. Overcoming that somewhat traumatic beginning, the land was claimed for England, and the first settlers arrived in 1612 to begin their new lives here in St. George’s. Many of the town’s buildings were constructed in the 17th to 19th centuries and authorities have made an effort to camouflage modern development, with underground power lines and street lighting in period style. Historic structures have new identities as homes, museums, restaurants, pubs, and shops, and horse-drawn carriage rides through the quaint streets complete the time machine effect.
