Those who can’t quite believe they have made it to the literal ends of the earth can head to Mirador La Cruz for a panoramic view of the brightly painted buildings with steeply pitched roofs of Punta Arenas, the Strait of Magellan, and the island of Tierra del Fuego in the distance. Trails through the treeless undulating landscape around Otway Bay lead to a rookery where Magellanic penguins come to nest, digging burrows in the sand. Guanacos and rheas inhabit the route and are sure to make an appearance. Inland is the Patagonian pampas, where a visit to an estancia (ranch), introduces the cowboys of the south.
