Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain

Tenerife, dubbed the “island of eternal spring,” is the largest of the Canary Islands. Its most famous attraction is an enormous volcanic crater 30 miles (48 km) around, out of which Mount Teide soars to a height of 12,200 ft (3,718 m). A cable car provides transportation to the top, for a breathtaking panorama of islands afloat in a blue sea. Santa Cruz is perfect for exploration on foot, with wide avenues, excellent examples of modernist architecture, sophisticated shops, and an oasis of birdsong, fountains, and greenery in the city park. An open-air sculpture garden exhibits the work of contemporary artists amidst palm trees and the lushness of tropical foliage.
