Henry VIII built Portland Castle to defend against invasion from France or Spain, depending on which he happened to be warring against with at any given moment. It wasn’t an easy coast for them to attempt, especially in foggy weather, and there are tales of shipwrecks and smuggling to be discovered at the Portland Museum. Dorchester is the county seat, historic market town, and an inspiration for hometown boy Thomas Hardy, who set some of his novels there. From Portland visits can be made to Bath, with its natural hot springs and stunning architecture, and the mysterious megaliths of Stonehenge.
