Novorossiysk is Russia’s main port on the Black Sea, named a Hero City for its defense of this crucial facility during WWII. Russia is the 11th-largest wine producer in the world, and 60% of its output comes from this region. These wineries are the country’s oldest, their development overseen by Prince Golitsyn, the godfather of modern Russian winemaking, who in the late 19th century brought in French specialists for the purpose of making sparkling wines, and established a school to train vintners.
