Faaborg is a picturesque old town of narrow cobblestone streets lined with a variety of colorful half-timbered houses and small craftsmen’s cottages. It is aptly set on the fairytale island of Funen, so called because master storyteller Hans Christian Anderson was born in Odense, the island’s main city, where trolls hang out on street corners and ducklings have every expectation of turning into swans. Scattered across a landscape of forests, fields, and tiny villages of thatched dwellings, are castles that are right at home in fairytales, such as the well fortified Egeskov Castle, holding court in the middle of a lake, complete with drawbridge and turrets.
