Founded by the Spartans in 706 BC, and known as “The Spartan City”, Taranto’s long and proud history is set against a beautiful countryside of gentle hills and valleys, long stretches of beaches, rocky cliffs, and a sapphire-blue sea. The city itself is more industrial, although there is still plenty to behold including the Taranto Cathedral, Museo Nazionale Archeologico, and Ponte Girevole, a swing bridge that connects the modern city center with the heart of old Taranto—a Medieval town where the Aragonese Castle and many other ancient sites can be found. Of course no trip to an Italian town is complete without trying the best of its local foods, and in Taranto, that means sampling mussels, oysters, burrata cheese, olive oil, and sausages, accompanied by Castel del Monte and Primitivo di Manduria wines.
