Safaga, Egypt

Safaga is a gateway to the fabulous ancient temples of Luxor, with their massive columns and statues, and intriguing hieroglyphics, as well as the Pharonic tombs in the Valleys of Kings and Queens. It is the ancient Thebes, the glorious city of the god Amun-Ra, whose Great Temple at Karnak was begun by Ramses II in the 14th century BC. In the arid and empty landscape on the west bank of the Nile, lies the necropolis of Egypt’s ancient rulers, its many tombs cut into natural limestone deposits. Inside them paintings and carvings on ceilings and walls contain symbolic and ritual meanings, and an air of mystery.
