Constanta was an ancient metropolis and seaport, founded by the Greeks in 600 BC. It has a place in legend too, as Jason is said to have landed here with the Argonauts after finding the Golden Fleece. It is a repository of archaeological treasures, most importantly a vast complex on three levels that once linked the upper town to the harbor. Two-thirds of it remains, including a large display of multicolored mosaics. The old town is full of atmosphere and worth a wander. Fine mansions and hotels were built in the 19th century, when the king decided to revive Constanta as a port and seaside resort, and a casino is a more recent addition.
