The island of Ishigaki is part of Japan’s Yaeyama Archipelago, located off the northeast coast of Taiwan. Perhaps best known for the picture-perfect setting of Kabiri Bay, where the water is the purest blue, Ishigaki and its beautiful coastlines, beaches and look-offs are a nature lover’s dream. Dive alongside manta rays, snorkel among the coral reefs, or kayak down mangrove-lined rivers. Don’t miss Tojinbaka, the ornate grave dedicated to the nearly 400 Chinese shipwrecked in 1852. A day hike to Mt. Nosoko will reward you with views of the striking hillside and turquoise waters below. Be sure to try the renowned Ishigaki beef, Yaeyama soba (a popular local dish), fresh fish or sushi at one of the many bars and restaurants.
