It is impossible to forget that this city was the first ever target of an atomic bomb, but Hiroshima has emerged from its tragedy as a vibrant and thriving community, a condition very evident during a stroll down Hondori Street, a bustling pedestrian arcade lined with shops and restaurants. A visit to Peace Memorial Park is a time for reflection; here a flame burns that is not eternal, but will be extinguished when the last nuclear weapon on earth has been destroyed. For the contemplation of scenic views, head to Miyajima, an island famed for its shrine and torii gate, both of which appear to float on the sea during high tide.
