Kalimantan is Indonesia’s slice of territory (a generous two-thirds) on the island of Borneo, which it shares with the states of Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia, and the tiny sultanate of Brunei. It is an immense tropical rainforest through which mighty rivers flow, peopled in part by the Dayak tribe, not too many years removed from their reputation as fierce headhunters. The island is rich in flora and fauna, resources the government is increasingly moving to conserve. Untouched forest reserves are protected, reforestation projects are well underway in other areas, and rehabilitation and reintroduction projects for orangutans and sun bears are now priorities.
